Although pumice prophylaxis does not affect how well the tooth uptakes the Fl; however, can accumulated plaque shorten the lenght of time Fl varnish stays on tooth surface?

Is it true, that the F varnish can be effective even if the tooth has plaque?

There was talk in class of racial differences in the differences in dental health being being a greater factor than economic status. Such that, minorities who have a higher income still do not have a better quality of dental health. Does anyone know why?

To avoid flourosis, how do we determine how much flouride the patient recieves from sources other than water, such as tooth paste, before we give them a perscription of flouride?

It is important to gather information regarding all potential sources of fluoride for a child before prescribing additional systemic fluoride tablets.

Hi Marc Thomas,
To respond to your question on racial differences in dental health within groups of same economic status... I feel that diet is an important factor.
The diet of many minority groups, such as with Hispanic people, is high in carbohydrates. Carbs are relatively inexpensive and have become a staple of minority diets. Regardless of the fact that the minority person now has a higher socioeconomic status, the diet is a part of their culture.
If you check out my lunch box, you will likely find tons of carbs and very few veggies & protein.
Not to mention how popular fried foods are (vs. baking or broiling foods)! Yeah, frying foods in fat is a cheap and readily accesible manner to kill bugs in food. But that's a different subject.

I get questions all the time from parents who want to know how much fluoride to give their kids. I tell them that it depends on the amount of fluoride already present in their water, but I do not know where the parents can find out this info.
Does anyone know of a website or agency that parents can contact to determine the ppm of fluoride in their water?
Thanks,

I have the same question as Raquel...how are we suppose to know how much fl is in a community's water system? How about the various bottled water? And are there water filters that filter out fl from water, and if yes then do we assume that a child is not getting the proper amounts?
